On November 29th, the anniversary of the Swedish Freedom of the Press Act – the first of its kind in the world – was celebrated with a panel discussion at Schwedenhaus in Vienna. Together, the Swedish and the Finnish Embassies and OSCE-delegations arranged a panel discussion to highlight some of the challenges facing freedom of speech today. The evening was hosted by Ambassador Fredrik Löjdquist (Swedish OSCE delegation) and Ambassador Helen Eduards (Swedish Embassy). The discussion addressed developments in Austria and Sweden, as well as in the wider OSCE region (OSCE’s 57 participating states). Challenges touched upon included various aspects of today’s modern media landscape, the connection between limitations of freedom of speech and alleged national security concerns, propaganda and trolling, as well as online and offline attacks on journalists. During the evening the exhibition ”Swedish Freedom of the Press Unfolded” was showcased.
